[BAND] Sekumpulan Orang Gila

Sekumpulan Orang Gila (SOG) is an uprising Post-Hardcore/Metalcore band from Batu Caves, Malaysia. Consists of six talented commoner. They are Acap (vocal/scream), Adek (guitar/clean vocal), Nazrin (guitar/clean vocal/bamboo flute/cello), Lee (drums), Mel (bass) and Naz (keys/synth). Started their serious journey during mid-2009 with six enthusiastic teenagers ; Nazrin, Adek, Mel, Lee, Acap and Sam. They have big music influence towards post-hardcore bands such as The Devil Wears Prada, UnderOath and We Came As Roman. Now SOG is better than before after Nazhar replaced Sam due to some internal reason in mid-2010.

Since then, SOG expanded their music influences when Nazrin, Adek and Naz utilizing their music knowledge that they learned in their university into SOG, and then they also added some native world music such as African, Indian and Arabic beats + melodies, Malay traditional tunes and some classical elements like music from baroque and romantic period. As the result, SOG created a massive crossover/hybrid tunes that made them becoming more flexible to perform in any event such as total underground gigs, prom night, corporate events, acoustic session and even mainstream stages.

SOG became the champion of Battle Of Acoustics 2010 at Lepaq Cafe, Kelana Jaya and NAZRIN won 2nd place in KEYNOTE 2010 (a brand new ASTRO reality TV show searching for talented composer and producer around Malaysia). SOG also shared stage with lots of popular local bands and international bands such as USA's top-screamo-darling, EYES SET TO KILL live in KL last 10th July 2011. Recently, SOG won a high-profile Battle Of The Band, Celcom UOX Battle'11 that was held at Opera Sunway Pyramid defeating more than 100 bands throughout Malaysia.

THIS IS AN EXCERPT FROM THE INTERVIEW
p/s We are only able to interview Nazrin Shah, guitarist, SOG.

Hello guys, how are you?
Hello, we are doing great here.

We would like to ask some questions about your band, if you don't mind?
Hey, its okay. go ahead

Okey first, how did you come up with the band name?
All right, first of all, we are so sorry because we are not good in English but we'll try to make you understand what we will say and answer.

Okay, SEKUMPULAN ORANG GILA (a bunch of crazy dudes) is originated from the acronym of our previous name, SOG (sound of genocide). During mid of 2009, all of us (SOG) agreed to rebrand ourselves to a new direction hence we changed our name to SEKUMPULAN ORANG GILA.

People always asked why sekumpulan orang gila? We are not that 'gila' like crazy people who lost their minds because of stress etc, in malay, we are 'gila berkarya'. We have strong passion towards creating arts towards sounds and performances.

In other case, we think that Sekumpulan Orang Gila is quite a catchy and controversial name that can makes us to easily move forward. Heheh

Haha okey, how long you guys have been a band together?
We've been together since may 05, so now 6 years and 3 months.

Wow, you guys are strong enough.
How does it feel to be in a professionally signed band?
Hey thanks, actually we didnt signed in any major labels yet. But now we are in process of signing album recording contract with Universal Records, but we are still in process of signing album recording contract with Universal Records.

Owh, great!
Okey, where is your hometown?
Basically 5 of us are from Selayang/Batu Caves, and 5 of us are studying at UiTM Shah Alam.

Erm, do the people back at home support you?
I apologized for being asked personal questions.
It's okay, people back at home? Some of them are quite supportive, some of them takes time to convince them and proof them that we are heading north and some of them, haisshhh. Heheh

Okay, to the next question. Who is your idol and why?
System Of A Down, The Devil Wears Prada, We Came As Romans, Asking Alexandria, August Burns Red. These are our idol in terms of making music in SOG.

And what's your favorite song of all time?
Hm, thats quite subjective, because each of our band mates have different taste of music. For me, im a universal listener so its hard for me to choose which one is my favourite.

Haha, okey.
What's the most bizarre thing to happen while you guys were onstage?
Actually its not bizarre for us. But its quite funny during onstage, we looked at each others when one of us did a mistake and then we laughed out loud though during breakdowns etc.

Do you guys have any other hobbies, besides making music?
Because of we are SEKUMPULAN ORANG GILA, we like to do something bizarre in front of public like, prank one of our band mates in front of public by accusing him and shout aloud telling that he fart just now and it smells soooooo bad.

haha, fun!
Erm, You guys have a new album out soon or gigs coming up?
InsyaAllah, we will be releasing our debut material this coming october/november.Stay tune!

If you guys touring soon, Who was your favourite band to tour with?
We are really hope that one day we will share stage with TDWP. Other than that, We Came As Romans, August Burns Red, Architects, Asking Alexandria, A Day To Remember, Woe Is Me and UnderOath.

For last question, do you enjoy being a celebrity?
Ahahahahaha! We dont think that we are in that level to be called as 'celebrity'.

Who's know after you guys win U.O.X battle.
It's just a competition, just a battle band, not a reality tv show.

What are your hopes for the near future?
We are really hoping that people out there to check us out and support us and we are currently striving for mainstream arena, hope that mainstream listeners accept our tunes.

Alright, thank you for giving us a little time.
hey, no problemo!

[BAND] Massacre By Fall

A 5 piece post-hardcore/screamo band influences mostly from various bands worldwide. Began in early 2008 with "Our Last Date" as the band name. Named "Massacre By Fall" at the end of 2008. The band is based @ Kuala Lumpur.Current line up; RANGGA(vocal), WAN(guitar), DANIEL (guitar), EMMET(bass) & ADEK (drum) .

The Band Massacre by Fall practically began the JUST SCREAM MUSIC record label, beginning with RANGGA (Ameer Nazrin Moore) Being the president, soon then, JUST SCREAM MUSIC began to have new members, and now the band were able to concentrate on their music instead of the label, except for RANGGA of course.

Massacre by Fall had most of its influence following the Indonesian screamo scene and mixing it a bit with their own malay "sound" to produce a new hybrid in a way. Massacre by Fall is one of the only screamo bands in Malaysia to use most "malay" language in their songs, and they have use it as a trademark for their band.

THIS IS AN EXCERPT FROM THE INTERVIEW

Hello guys, how are you?
We're good man, whats up?

We would like to ask some questions about your band, if you don't mind?
No worries, ask away..

Okey first, how did you come up with the band name?
Well the name began originally with "Our Last Date" back in 2008, we changed the name in 2009, back then we were more an emo band compared to what we are now. Rangga came up with "Massacre by Fall" which meant "pembunuhan pada masa senja" it was a combination between screamo and a bit of metal at the same time, we basically wanted to change the whole emo conception.

How does it feel to be in a professionally signed band?
Well we are not under any professional label, but instead we joined in a label that RANGGA made, which is JUST SCREAM MUSIC.

Owh, great!
Okey, where is your hometown?
We're basically all around betweeen Selayang,Gombak, Shah Alam and Mont Kiara, but we often go to THE BANDSHOP when it comes to jam sessions

Erm, do the people back at home support you?
I apologized for being asked personal questions.
Haha, its okay bro, we dont mind the personal questions, hmm.. well most of us do not get much of the support from our family because its not MAINSTREAM -___-'', but alhamdulillah so far so good, i mean, if they dont support its not much of a problem as long as they dont interfere.. haha..

Okay, to the next question. Who is your idol and why?
Our idol? damn,, haha, well we usually like to answer that question by saying that its A SKYLIT DRIVE and ALESANA. but lately for our own music, we have been trying to create our own identity by not actually following a certain band, we dont like to be labeled as a copy band, so we are trying to work on that, haha

And what's your favorite song of all time?
Hmm.. i dont think we can answer that because there like a looooot! haha, but mostly comes from bands like A SKYLIT DRIVE, ALESANA, WOE IS ME, ASKING ALEXANDRIA, WE CAME AS ROMANS, TEXAS IN JULY (These are fav songs from bands, not influences)

Haha, okey.
What's the most bizarre thing to happen while you guys were onstage?
The most bizarre thing i would have to say during our show in KUANTAN, it was the first time for us to perform there, so we thought that no one is gonna be there when we perform, so we were like, "shit, do they even know our song?" but then it turned out fantastic! there were stage dives, headbangs, and countless people singing a long! we were so happy that day!

Do you guys have any other hobbies, besides making music?
Hobbies? hmm, as a band dont have any certain hobbies, although we do like poking our friend PENYU cause he is "Melatah" haha, so i would consider that as a hobby? haha. but individually he have our own hobbies obviously.

haha, fun!
Erm, You guys have a new album out soon or gigs coming up?
Yes, we do have an album coming out in 2012, it will be out in february or march hopefully. Gigs? yes alhamdulillah, we do have some major upcoming gigs coming up, besides the normal weekly gigs in KL, we do have some other gigs in penang happening in september, we have the JUST SCREAM MUSIC BAND TOUR happening in october, Jakarta on the 28th-3rd of october, KLCC (The event is organized by numerous labels, JUST SCREAM being one of them) in november and CRAZNOCKZ FEST in december 2011, CRAZNOCKZ FEST is organized by CRAZNOCKZ malaysia, SHAH ALAM CHAOS CRIMINALS and JUST SCREAM MUSIC. it will be also participated by Indonesian bands and Singaporean bands.

If you guys touring soon, Who was your favourite band to tour with?
Touring? haha, hmm.. i would say we love to tour with SEKUMPULAN ORANG GILA, CORSETS, THE ONLY CURE IS DYING, HEART A TACK, EVIDENCE SPEAKS, BALLAD FOR LAYLA, THY REGIMENT and SECOND COMBAT. These bands are awesome, they have been close friends with us and they had helped us a lot during recordings and shows.

For last question, do you enjoy being a celebrity?
Celebrity? hahaha, whos the celebrity? haha, no we're not celebrities, we're just kids trying to create something that is able to "click" with other people

What are your hopes for the near future?
Our hopes is to be able to reach out to every ear in Malaysia, we hope to create better material for the fans and friends, we are just so thankful where we are now, everyone has been so nice to us, we just would like to thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts, and that we love you all so much!

and finally we would like to thank NEST for being a good sport and for helping us expose our material, keep up the good work you guys, much love from us, MASSACRE BY FALL

[NEWS] Every Time I Die : In The Studio August 18, 2011

Every Time I Die’s sixth studio album, which they recorded with producer Joe Barresi (Queens Of  The Stone Age, Coheed And Cambria) in Pasadena, California, is completed and currently being mixed. AP caught up with vocalist Keith Buckley at home in Buffalo—“Well, more like in my car looking for my cigarettes,” he says—to get more details on the still-untitled LP, which is due in early 2012.

You guys really recorded this album under the radar.
It was a blur, to be honest.  We’re used to recording where every instrument is done one at a time and vocals go last, so I’m usually sitting for three weeks not doing anything. But from front to back, everyone was involved all the time. Some days it was actually hard to find time to tweet about anything. [Laughs.]

That’s how you know you’re busy.
Yeah, if you can’t make time for Twitter, chances are you definitely have your head down.

How long were you guys out there in California?
Four weeks, I think almost exactly.

What is the album sounding like?
Everyone [in a band] is always saying the newest thing is their best work. No one is going to be like, “You know what, to be honest, [our new stuff] sounds like shit.” [But] this is the first record we’ve done with a new drummer [Ryan Leger]. You know, we’ve had our old drummer [Mike "Ratboy" Novak] from day one. When you make a new foundation for the band, it’s going to alter the way the things get built. It sounds like a different band; it sounds like it’s got a lot more energy to it, a lot more aggression. [Ryan’s] just a better drummer. You can tell there’s new vitality, which we haven’t had in a long time.

How did you guys write this album?  I know you’re so busy doing the Damned Things, so when did the music get written?
Jordan [Buckley, guitarist] came to Buffalo for a month—he was living on a couch, just kind of hanging out in Buffalo. Him and Andy [Williams, guitarist] and Ryan the drummer, who’s from Canada, would all just get together three or four days a week—we rented a practice space downtown—and just jam. Then I’d get the finished-as-it-could-be product.  And then I’d listen to it and work on it.  It was a much different experience for me, because I was actually on tour with the Damned Things when the lyrics were being written. My comfort zone is sitting in my house, in my room, in front of a computer—especially in the winter. We always write in the winter, so I’m used to not ever being distracted, and [I’m] focusing solely on writing. I was very afraid—okay, we were writing a record in the summer and I’m not even home and I’m in Europe and not only am I in Europe, but I’m with a bunch of dudes that I’m kind of fresh with. [The Damned Things] haven’t toured so much that it’s like it’s a routine yet, so I didn’t know how it was going to be.
It feels like [lyrically] the way it was approached definitely came from a different spot, which is often something I was always too afraid to [do]—you know, if it’s not broke, don’t fix it. I was never like, “Oh, I should try writing differently this time, maybe upset that balance a little—find somewhere new to write, find new things to write about.” I knew it worked. This time it was definitely forget everything I had done before and come from a different place.

If you changed up everything, how did this change your writing?
It’s just more spontaneous. I didn’t feel like I was reaching for anything.  My productivity level was out of control. There were times where I was doing two songs in a day—and not just to get them done, but genuinely, like, they’re on the record and they’re great songs.  They’re not B-sides. There was stuff I was really proud of. A lot of that has to do with changing your perspective on everything—literally looking at different things while you’re writing.
It sounds so corny: I started meditating a lot in the past year, and that was a big thing for me. It was like, “Okay, I can drink a lot, but there’s obviously some source of unhappiness here, and I got to get to the bottom of it.” I started meditating a lot, and it changed the way I looked at things and helped me make peace with a lot of stuff, so I feel like I’m drawing from a deeper well.

That’s very cool.  It seems like a lot of people get to a certain age and need to examine what’s going on.
Exactly—and like I said, I could just keep doing it because I knew that it worked. I was okay—I wasn’t, like, beating up anybody when I was drunk, I wasn’t driving when I was drunk; I was a harmless, functioning alcoholic.  That’s the point where I was—it was getting kind of boring, I want to be [functioning] differently, so meditation is the best way to do it.

How else has the band dynamic changed? You’re bringing in these musical changes, and Ryan’s new. How did that affect recording this time?
It was crazy, because we didn’t realize before that [Ryan] is the most technical and professional member in the band.  As a studio drummer in Canada—you know, he’s recorded for essentially what would be like the American Idols in our country, I don’t know what that’s called. So he knows studio lingo…he’s, like, actually speaking the producer’s language.  It was definitely cool.  We all worked together—and like I said, from front to back, everyone was in the same room working and offering suggestions, which was definitely better than before.

Tell me what it’s like working with Joe Barresi.
Very much just sort of—well, laid-back is the best thing to say, but laid-back does not mean disinterested at all. He was very, very involved, but he just kind of let us take the reigns. If we wanted to try something, [he said] absolutely. It was never like, “Ah, I don’t think that’s going to work.”  And the thing is—he’s such a gear hoarder, he can make up sounds for any instrument out of anything at all. And he has that catalogued in his brain. It’s not like, “Hey, let’s plug this weird thing into this other really weird thing and then run it through an amp and see how it sounds.” He knows exactly what amp he has to go get and what levels it has to be at to get that sound he just invented.  To see him do that, it was like an alchemy lab in there with a lot of different sounds. He was willing to try anything and everything.  Which was great.

He’s so good at just getting massive sounds, if you look at the bands he’s worked with.
Yeah, he is. The fact that we were kind of, like I said, left to our own devices—and then we’re so happy with the way everything came out—I think it was just that we had reached an immediate level of comfort. We were confident in ourselves, and we weren’t worried about [whether] he would want to change everything if we were doubting it. I feel like he believed in us, which was great.

What else do you want people to know?
Reading the lyrics this time and listening to the music, people can tell this is a band that, after the sixth album, is just starting to hit its stride. I don’t think we’re so concerned with our permanent record anymore that we’re upset about what’s happening, what we’ve done, what we should be doing in order to get more kids to like us, to sell more records. You can definitely tell by listening to this one we’re in it for us this time.

[NEWS] Asking Alexandria Experiences Problems In Seattle With Vocalist Danny Worsnop

Several hours ago Asking Alexandria posted the following statement on the band's Facebook page:
"We are so sorry Seattle. We will make this right. Once Danny wakes up from his nightmare that was tonight, he will face the music. Thank you to everyone who stayed with us through all of it and joined us on stage to keep the spirit alive. Forgive us Seattle. We will make this right."
The band then followed that message with this statement:
"We are NOT breaking up and we are all still 5 united brothers in this together. Tomorrow Danny will speak for himself to all of you about what happened tonight in Seattle. We love you guys, you are the best fans in the world!"
Although the band didn't specifically state what caused the problem, vocalist Danny Worsnop has now updated his Twitter account with the following string of messages (condensed into one paragraph here):

"I'm a fucking idiot. I should never blame my actions on my relapses but tonight made me realize I have a problem. I for the first time in my life want to fix myself. I now know what regret is! I apologize from the bottom of my heart. Hopefully I grow to have some sort of compassion to myself, I live for self destruction and that's wrong. Nothing changes when you're killing yourself with poison. I love you all. And I hope you can forgive me. I officially am quitting drugs and getting drunk here and now. I want to clean up and sort my fuxking life out. I'll never stop hating myself until I stop killing myself. Thank you all for standing by me. If any R&R shows get canceled, I'm away fixing Myself. I hope you understand."
Additional details on this story, and any additional announcements from the band, will be announced as they are made available. In the mean time, you can also check out the band performing on the Daily Habit at this location.
Updated: Here's a video from the show (it's gets better after the first minute or so) - props to our reader "meask":

[BAND] The Word Alive

The Word Alive was formed originally as a side project by ex-vocalist Craig Mabbitt (Escape The Fate, Blessthefall), who was replaced by singer Tyler “Telle” Smith (formerly of Greeley Estates and In Fear And Faith) when Mabbitt exited the band in November 2008. In 2009 the group released Empire, which has already sold more than 15,000 copies and spent time on Billboard’s “Heatseekers” chart. Quickly winning over listeners with its scorching musicianship and Smith’s hyperkinetic vocals, the EP set the stage for an even deeper, more innovative full-length to follow.
“On Deceiver, we wanted to take everything that we did on the EP and boost it times ten,” says Smith. “We got to do everything that we feel represents us on this album. In some parts it sounds like you could almost be listening to an ambient/indie band because of the electronic influences, in other parts it’s dark and almost creepy. We spent a lot of time before writing the album thinking of how we could sample other instruments to really add depth—either keyboard parts that Dusty [Riach, keyboardist] would do, or cello, violins and different percussion instruments.
“One thing’s for sure,” Smith adds. “On this album, when we’re heavy, we’re way heavier.”
